As a therapeutic distraction from hiding from the Cootie Apocalypse and managing my rage over endless reports of police violence, I’ve begun devoting some of my attention to cardboard crafting. I really enjoy these projects; I usually listen to audiobooks or podcasts, or watch education-focused YouTube videos while I’m crafting.
I finished my first little project yesterday—an organizer for my growing collection of alcohol-based markers. I spent two days cutting down and glueing pieces of various boxes I’ve collected over the last few months. For this project, most of the boxes were from the grocery deliveries we’ve received during quarantine.
Near the end of the day yesterday, I returned my attention to my lighting fettish, reexamining the lighting setup at my main computer workstation. I’ve been trying out various ideas for this lighting setup, off and on, for months; the way light splashes all around the room with this setup has been tickling related OCD instincts. Cardboard is particularly convenient solution for this problem.
I started crafting a homemade lighting modifier out of old Kleenex boxes late yesterday afternoon and I finished my design this morning. I’ve attached this DIY grid to my LED’s barn doors with binder clips and salvaged segments of elastic bands.
This homemade light modifier was fun to make, works better than I expected it to, cost me little more than time and some available, recyclable/repurposed materials. And I was able to get the whole thing set up weeks faster than any current UPS or FedEx delivery!
